Essar Steel

The R&D at Essar Steel primarily focuses on three aspects: process improvement, new product development and raw material. Essar Steel has small focused groups who work on individual projects with specific goals and definite targets in mind. Any project for R&D is decided based on the business need. Today, over 25% of revenues for the company are derived from the products developed under R&D over the last three years.

The company has been continually innovating to create new products that meet specific customer requirements, which has, in many cases, replaced imports by customers and opened up export markets for Essar.  They currently produce over 300 grades of steel, which conform to quality standards of international certification agencies and enable them to supply steel to many marquee projects both in India and abroad. Essar Steel produces over 60% of its production in value-added grades.

Essar has developed products as diverse as very low strength ultra pure soft steel for soft magnets being used in neutrino research to ultra high strength and high hardness bullet proof steels with ballistic performance for defence applications. Essar has developed more than 17 new steel products in the past year in sectors like defence, ship building, oil & gas, boilers and pressure vessels, yellow goods and mining equipment, automobile, electrical steel, wind energy, general construction, etc. The R&D centre is approved by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India.
