GAIL India
GAIL India needs no introduction. India’s principal, state-owned natural gas processing and distribution company reaches across segments. Its activities are as diverse as gas transmission and marketing to processing (for fractionating LPG, propane, SPB solvent and pentane), transmission of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), and productions and marketing of petrochemicals, city gas distribution, exploration and production, as well as power and renewable energy through equity and joint venture participations.
Despite over three decades having passed since its incorporation, its relevance seems to have only grown over the years. The Public Sector Undertaking (PSU), which falls under the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas, has come a long way since the construction, operation and maintenance of the Hazira-Vijaypur-Jagdishpur (HVJ) pipeline project, which was one of the largest cross-country natural gas pipeline projects in the world. More recently, this has been possible under the able leadership of Tripathi, whose term was, in fact, set to expire in 2014, but was later extended.
GAIL today has diversified into petrochemicals, telecom and liquid hydrocarbons, in addition to gas infrastructure. It enjoys more than 70% market share in both gas transmission and marketing. They have expanded their footprint by setting up a wholly-owned subsidiary company, GAIL Global (Singapore) Pte Ltd in Singapore in order to pursue overseas business opportunities, including LNG and petrochemical trading. A similar undertaking, called GAIL Global (USA) Inc., was also set up in Texas, USA.
