At the Oragadam plant, Delphi-TVS adopted best practices to enhance operating efficiency and accomplish operational cost control. The company has taken an innovative approach to reduce cost on multiple parameters. Material cost effectiveness has been improved through the localisation of parts and material cost improvements such as change in product design without affecting the product requirement. Tooling cost effectiveness was increased by using alternative, localised tools and consumables, and consolidating of procurement to lower cost. Power cost effectiveness was ensured by using alternative energy generation methods such as 80% from wind power and 8% from solar power to considerably reduce the cost. Front-line maintenance is carried out at the beginning of the shift in all machines, in addition to Time Based Maintenance (TBM) and Condition Based Maintenance (CBM), all to bring about repair & maintenance cost effectiveness. Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) including performance efficiency is tracked as part of employee-related cost effectiveness. Finally, scrap cost effectiveness is maintained through the deployment of Total Quality Management (TQM) system at the plant.
“We are looking forward to a positive scenario in 2017 volumes, compared with the previous financial year. This is because of consistent volumes of some of our products categories due to government regulations as well as other business scenario with our collaborators,” explains Ravichandran. He adds that they are flexible on four accounts: people, machine, flow and material, in order to counter fluctuations.
