Punj Lloyd group
Punj Lloyd has been working in the field of aerospace and defence for almost seven years. Last year, it initiated several operational improvements and one of them was lean manufacturing. In the defence sector, where continuous development of new products is a focus, it started measuring Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) of its equipment. Now, each operator measures the OEE of their respective equipment. It collected data of major losses done for each shift operation and the line supervisors took corrective and preventive actions thus resulting in productivity improvement and better utilisation of machines. Punj Lloyd also developed new products for the Ordnance Factory Board (OFB). It worked closely with Gun Carriage Factory, Jabalpur, on development of key parts of Dhanush Gun, wherein its engineers in coordination with the GCF team provided cost effective and innovative solutions. A key parameter for fast track development was localisation of raw material that led to cutting down of material procurement time.
The focus for 2017 is understanding and accurately defining the customer’s requirement to produce quality products. The company believes in understanding changing customers needs so as to adapt to it. Its short turnaround time for product development makes them well positioned for taking up and delivering new products for defence and non-defence customers.
The company has also conducted studies on improving plant layout considering future manufacturing requirements, which includes precision manufacturing to heavy fabrication products. It is also planning to implement SMED (single minute exchange of dies) concept considering new opportunities and has taken up skill development programme for multi-skilling machine operators.
