Motherson Sumi Systems

Founded in 1975, Samvardhana Motherson Group also known as Motherson Sumi Systems (MSSL) has a diversified industry-leading portfolio of auto ancillary products and services that make it a full system solutions provider for its customers across the globe. It has leading products ranging from electrical distribution systems, automotive rear view mirrors, polymer processing, lighting systems, air intake manifolds and HVAC systems.

Last month, the company has offered Rs 4,150 crore to acquire Finland’s PKC Group Oyj as it works towards becoming an $18 billion company. The takeover, due to be completed by the end of March, will be made through an MSSL subsidiary formed for the purpose. PKC is a leading supplier of wiring harness to companies that make heavy- and medium-duty commercial vehicles and locomotives across North America, Europe, Brazil and China. The PKC purchase fits into its ‘Vision 2020’ growth strategy to achieve 16.7 billion euros ($17.9 billion) in revenue by 2019-20.

MSSL is also expanding its mirror manufacturing base in Hungary. It recently bought the automotive business operation — including, land, buildings and machinery — of the Hungarian company Ábrahám és Társa Kft. for more than 10 million euros ($10.7 million). The local firm moulds and assembles components, mainly for car rear view mirrors and lighting.

The company’s biggest growth in Europe came in 2011 with its purchase of the former German auto molder Peguform GmbH, which brought it extensive mirror business in the region.

Today, about 85% of its revenue comes from overseas markets.
