Ashok Leyland
In 2016, Ashok Leyland adopted a wide range of innovative technologies in order to compete better in the Indian market. The automotive giant implemented EGR/SCR based BS4 across the entire range of engines. They also introduced Disc Brakes in some of their modules, while a three cylinder engine was brought in for the 12T truck. Dual Engine data is also set on a range of models in order to optimise fuel efficiency.
Their school bus segment also saw the adoption of a host of new of technologies: the buses meet the rollover test and the frontal impact test, even though both of these are not mandated for this class of buses; they have the lowest floor height in front engine configuration; they have anti-microbial treatment on touch points; and they use telematics, so the location of the bus is known to parents and school authorities.
Speaking of the coming year, Bhagavathula professes, “There is an uncertainty due to GST and implementation of BS4, that is whether there will be pre-buy of BS3 or not. Also, a host of new regulations with minimal lead time – such as AC for all cabs – leads to a lot of turmoil in the entire supply chain. ”
