India accounts for 18% of global milk production in the world. However, intermittent power supply and frequent power cuts has sapped the momentum of milk production. To meet its power demand, Mother Dairy commissioned four solar projects across India with a combined capacity of 800kWh. Furthermore, projects like VAM, condensate recovery and cost saving initiatives like shifting to efficient alternatives like LEDs, installing VFDs in process and utilities and decreasing set temperature in processes as per the ambient temperature fluctuations helps the company to keep power costs in control.

In order to reduce dependability on fossil fuels, Mother Dairy also uses advanced Concentrated Solar Technology to cater to hot water requirements in the process. Utilising methane gas generated post treatment of effluents and using bio-fuels like briquette in place of furnace oil (FO) helps in reduction of CO2 emissions.

Besides this, in order to save water, Mother Dairy is installing water recycling plants in two of its major plants. Another improvement is manpower efficiency, which is driven through automation of packing lines.

To meet fluctuating business needs, the company plans to set up more factories that are capable of manufacturing multiple products ranging from milk to milk products including fermented products, ice-creams and ambient products. It also keeps in mind the conversion facility considering the fluctuating seasonal supply of milk in the country. Geographical location of processing plants helps Mother Dairy to ensure flexibility when it comes to supplying fresh products to the market.
