ISRO has developed a technology that will help the Indian Armed Forces sent on ‘beyond the enemy lines’ operations in the future. ISRO developed the technology as a part of its IRNSS and has transferred it to the defence PSU BEL. This technology will be a part of the ‘Restricted Service’ (IRNSS-RS) and has been developed for the strategic users of the country. BEL has signed an agreement with ISRO for developing the technology and it will be used to track the position of fishing vessels and other emergencies. BEL is also working with ISRO to develop a portable IRNSS Receiver solely for navigation applications. As an offshoot of this programme, BEL has developed variants based on IRNSS-RS receiver functionality such as PTS (Precision Time Servers) in both rack mount and wall mount form factors and receivers with map-based navigation application.
In another move, Phase-I of the Real Time Train Information System (RTIS) has been successfully commissioned by Navratna defence PSU that will provide real-time train information to the Indian Railways. This is said to help in increasing the operational efficiency, in addition to enhancing passenger safety. The RTIS has been entirely designed, developed and manufactured in India. The system has been commissioned through CRIS, under the technical guidance of SAC, ISRO. RTIS is designed to provide real-time positional information of locomotives to the Railways. It facilitates the automatic acquisition of train movement data, including that of arrival, departure and run-through timings.
