The Chennai-based carmaker, which has sold 57,712 units in the first eight months of FY2020 (8.49%), is set to drive into the fiercely contested compact SUV segment, albeit one which continues to flourish despite the ongoing downturn. It also helps that SUVs continue to be the darlings of the passenger vehicle segment. It is the sole sub-segment within PVs to record growth in the April-November 2019 period (3.82%) and with 640,311 units, accounts for 34% of the overall PV market (1,882,051). A year ago, SUVs accounted for 27% and in better market conditions. Renault India has, between April-November 2019, more than doubled its UV market share to 3.97% from 1.58% a year ago.
Renault India, a fully owned subsidiary of Renault SAS France, is phasing out diesel vehicles in India and will come up with newer launches in the next 2-3 years, while expanding its dealership network to around 370 outlets by 2022. Before that, the company also plans to launch an EV in the Indian market by end of 2021.
Its plant at Chennai in India has a production capacity of 400,000 units. Opened in March 2010, the plant represents an investment of Rs 45 billion ($990 million) and employs 1,500 people. The first Renault vehicles designed for the Indian market to roll off the production lines were Koleos and Fluence.
Overseas, the French auto manufacturer has developed a special fabric from 100% recycled materials in collaboration with Les Filatures du Parc and Adient Fabrics. The Les Filatures du Parc is a French company specialized in carded yarn, while the Adient Fabrics is world’s leading supplier of automotive seats.
