As a Head of Operations at India Yamaha Motor (IYM), Paul guides the team to adopt innovative ways and processes at the shop floor. “Shop floor employees need to be guided and motivated so as to harness their creativity. Over the years, we have adopted several initiatives which has improved productivity and helped improve business. In addition to the traditional methods of 5S, TPM, Quality Circles, Cost down projects, localisation etc., many new initiatives like aiming to achieve the Theoretical Value in production, improving logistics efficiency, reducing ordering and manufacturing LT, building energy efficient factory, solar power captive consumption and many more best practices to optimise all the resources have been promoted,” he adds.
Paul says that 2019 is a challenging year for the 2-Wheeler industry  as it needs to adopt regulation requirements. Major focus area for the company is to prepare and establish the product & manufacturing processes equipped with advanced technologies.
“Technologies will be used in manufacturing processes which can produce continuously only good quality parts and products. To keep processes running efficiently, skill development and training of employees at the shop floor will be one of the major focus areas in 2019. We will start preparing for the future by engaging our employees in new technology areas so that they are competitive globally,” says Paul.
He is aware that manufacturing along with other sectors is going through a significant period of change. Driven by rapid technological development, manufacturers have to work smarter, operate more efficiently and be prepared to innovate. In order to be able to respond to these changes and remain competitive, embracing innovative technologies is now more important than ever. Advanced analytics, cloud computing, modeling and simulation, IoT, and optimisation and predictive analytics are some of the major technologies that the manufacturing sector will have to adopt in near future. Focus is to develop Smart Factories. With the EV era, new technologies will be introduced and many traditional manufacturing processes will be eliminated completely or reduced to a large extent.
