At Castrol, when we say supply chain it is an end-to-end supply chain, right from procurement to manufacturing, distribution, operations and then the service to the customer, says Jayanta Chatterjee. So manufacturing and the plants also come under the purview of supply chain.
Castrol India has three plants: Patalganga, Silvassa and Kolkatta. Similarly, the company has a strong supply chain presence across these cities and in regional locations in the country too. He adds that exports do not forma  large chunk of the India business as the Indian market is large enough for the employees to stay busy. India is the third biggest market globally after China and the USA.
In terms of sales, Castrol India sells 97% of what it manufactures in the country. It does sell material to China and Malaysia, but that is a small fraction, says Chatterjee.
Castrol has had a presence in India for more than 100 years and that has helped them in two ways. One is by sheer reach, as it was one of the early companies in lubricants to set up distribution netowrk here. Secondly, the company has a presence across a range of lubricants, unlike in other countries. It is present in 2-wheelers, 4-wheelers, trucks and commercial vehicles and has a strong industrial presence for machines, besides having a strong presence in road construction equipment.
