Creativity is in the DNA of every Hyundai employee. To help them come up with more creative solutions, HMIL up-skills employees across ranks and functions, with technical knowhow while multi skilling them. This equips them to deal with challenges not just in their specific area of work, but widens the scope across disciplines. The company has adopted a bottom-up approach, empowering them to share their ideas and implement them freely.
“We have enhanced this with a robust scientific approach deploying sophisticated digital tools. We have a platform to identify and utilise untapped potential of skilled employees to create sustainable, low-cost automation & fatigue reduction solutions in-house. This has improved work conditions and quality efficiencies across shop floors,” says Mani.
A few examples:
• HMIL uses a ToughPad which is loaded with preset information on quality confirmations for 350+ variants. Such high degree of customisation helps meet the growing customer requirement.
•  At the Paint Shop, it uses tools to understand the pain-points using predictive analysis during breakdowns.
• Automated systems like ‘Smart Bins’ are used in assembly shops to pick components and assemble them with zero spec error.
By deploying such tools and data analytic techniques, it has improved operational efficiency by 100% while collating 1.2 billion data points.
Mani believes a greener mobility solution is the way forward and is adapting these quickly to stay relevant. With Industry 4.0, data is the new currency. As an early adopter of technology, it has already begun the migration to ‘Plug & Play’ mechanisms across the shop floor. This is strengthened with investing in new technologically advanced machines and upgrading legacy machines.
In 2019, HMIL plans to install 150 smart sensors, 170 servo-motor parameters, 90 robot parameters for data collection and around 250 smart digital tools to increase efficiency. Simultaneously, it has begun training employees to meet the requirements of EVs. It is also exploring and integrating renewable energy options towards becoming a ‘self-sustainable’ plant.
