Piaggio Vehicles, which last unveiled the new series of Ape model of three-wheelers in CNG and LPG variants, is planning to invest about Rs 100 crore by 2020 in product development and new engine technology. Besides, three-wheelers and sub-one tonne Porta 700 and one-tonner Porta 1000 trucks, the 3.80-lakh-per-annum capacity plant also produces the iconic Vespa and Aprilia brand scooters. Besides, it also has an engine manufacturing facility, which produced 1.50 lakh engines per annum.
The company is on a big growth path. In the past 12 months both brands, Vespa and Aprilia, have been growing at around 70%. One of the key reasons is, the brands are very powerful and the products are world-class. Aprilia is catching up really fast, especially among the youth. It is the fastest scooter available in the market today making it more attractive for the new generation.
The company is also planning to come up with new products. Aprilia Storm will be launched by early 2019 and it recently launched Vespa Notte. Vespa GTS will come in by the end of next year. Piaggio also has plans to launch a few other products. It will also have offerings in the 150cc segment as well, and is fully prepared for BS-VI.
Piaggio Vehicles exports to South America, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Bangladesh, and Nepal. It is also looking at more countries to export to.
