Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) has been continuously exploring diversification opportunities in allied defence and non-defence areas for business growth. As part of the diversification efforts, BEL has entered into several new areas like Homeland Security & Smart City Business, Satellite Integration; Multi Junction Solar Cells, etc.
The various initiatives undertaken to diversify into allied areas have resulted in sizeable business for the company, especially in the areas of Homeland Security and Smart City Business and Gowtama hopes for many more opportunities to fructify in favour of BEL.
The company has been able to make reasonable success so far in the segment and win several competitive tenders for Smart City projects across the country. It has also qualified as one of the shortlisted partners of ISRO for assembly, integration and testing of satellites.
In its own way, BEL has been continuously carrying out changes in its organisational setup, business processes and systems to adapt to the changing business requirements. It is also investing substantially in expansion and modernisation of facilities especially in areas of radars, missile systems, advanced electro-optics, etc. 
Gowtama believes that in this challenging environment, technology is going to be the key driver for growth. “A paradigm shift is required to address the needs of the changing business environment. Some of the new-age abilities required are thinking ahead of competitors, ability to solve complex problems, effective use of data analytics, etc. These will be used extensively for decision making, product development, customer service, etc.,” he adds.
Not surprising that in the nine month period up to December 2018, the defence PSU achieved a net turnover of Rs 8,017 crore, registering a growth of about 20%. The company’s Bangalore complex is the first PSU to be recognised as Role Model Organisation by the CII in the history of the CII EXIM Bank Business Excellence Awards. Three other units  (Ghaziabad, Chennai and Machilipatnam) have received the Platinum level recognition for Business Excellence from CII.
