Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL)
After five decades of its existence, Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) continues to be a formidable force in its field of operation. As one of India’s largest power plant equipment manufacturer, the company is engaged in the design, engineering, manufacture, construction, testing, commissioning and servicing of a wide range of products and services. It works across a multitude of the nation’s vital sectors, including power, transmission, industry, transportation (Railways), renewable energy, oil & gas, water and defence.
As its leader, Atul Sobti is also a force to reckon with. Having taken over his current role just last year, he has already steered the company to greater heights. This is visible in the nature of the projects they are presently undertaking.
For instance, BHEL, in partnership with ABB, recently secured a landmark order from the Power Grid Corporation of India. BHEL’s scope of work, which is valued at Rs 1,360 crore, includes the setting up of a + 800 kV, 6,000MW HVDC link between the Western Region Grid (Raigarh, Chattisgarh) and the Southern Region Grid (Pugalur, Tamil Nadu). This happens to be the second Ultra High Voltage Direct Current (UHVDC) transmission project contract for BHEL. The company is presently executing the North-East Agra + 800kV, 6,000MW, multi terminal HVDC link, jointly with ABB. The HVDC link is expected to be established by 2019. Among other equipment and systems, BHEL will significantly contribute to this project by supplying converter transformers, shunt reactors, filter bank capacitors and instrument transformers from its Bhopal plant, as well as Thyristor valves from its electronics division in Bengaluru.
