“Our internal target is to invest 5% of our turnover in R&D,” spelt out Kumar to underline the importance accorded to research and development. He elaborated that the R&D is done at the global level, whereas the development part for India is done at the local level.
Customization of products and solutions to cater to the exact demand of the customer is what forms a major part of the development work done locally. Even if a customer demands a tool different from one available at Ceratizit, the company modifies it and delivers it. “We do a lot of customization for the Indian market,” said the Managing Director. “And we work very closely with our customers in the modification and development tasks we undertake,” he added.
On India, he was upbeat. “India market will grow,” he enthused. Kumar shared his views on the sectors to look out for. “Electronics machining is a sector that will take the lead, aerospace is developing very well, and defence sector will grow due to global issues while railways are picking up due to the government policies.”

He talked of ToolScope, a digital product that controls the cutting tool processes during the process itself and not after the process. The key strategy at Ceratizit is to be CO2 emission-free by 2040. “It is not a question if we will do it, the question is how fast can we proceed,” said the MD of the company that has a stated objective of becoming the leader in sustainability in the hard metal and cutting tool industry by 2025.
