Mahindra Last Mile Mobility (LMM), a subsidiary of Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M), has emerged as the top electric three-wheeler manufacturer for FY’23. The company has recently laid the foundation for a new manufacturing plant in Zaheerabad, Telangana, to expand its production capacity. Electric three-wheelers are one of the primary contributors to the electrification of the automotive industry in India due to their superior Total Cost of Ownership, noiseless, and pollution-free operation. They can aid in the country’s target to become carbon neutral by 2070.
The Ministry of Heavy Industries (MHI) has released the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for Domestic Value Addition (DVA) certification under the PLI-Auto Scheme. Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M), the Champion Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) in the PLI-Auto Scheme, is leveraging its range of electric three and four-wheelers to participate. The PLI scheme provides financial incentives to scale up the production of Advanced Automotive Technology (AAT) products and create employment opportunities.
M&M has welcomed the release of the SOP, which will enable PLI applicants to apply for product certification with testing agencies. The company has also appreciated the consultative approach taken by the MHI in developing these guidelines. The testing agencies’ authority to relax the SOP provisions acknowledges the automotive industry’s complex supply chain and is a welcome move.
Suman Mishra, CEO of Mahindra Last Mile Mobility, has expressed gratitude for the Indian Government’s support in promoting electric vehicles through the PLI scheme and the release of the SOP. Mishra believes the PLI scheme will help introduce more sustainable, affordable, and technology-driven three-wheeler EVs in India, contributing to a greener future for all.
