Immersive tech improves Honda EV design

Next-generation VR was key technology in styling of 2024 Honda Prologue EV, VR provides immersive environments for Honda designers and engineers to collaborate on next generation of products

Honda is utilising virtual reality (VR) technology to design future products, including the all-electric 2024 Honda Prologue and the 2023 Honda Pilot TrailSport. The COVID-19 pandemic prompted the LA-based Prologue design team to increase their use of VR to collaborate with global engineering and design teams.

The VR technology allowed the design teams to work together in a virtual environment and make refinements to the EV model’s clay modelling, colour, material, and finishes. The use of VR not only kept the Prologue design development on track but also enhanced the team’s capabilities for future designs. While traditional design processes were still employed, VR and augmented reality (AR) technology were mainly used for interior design execution, allowing for unlimited colour and materials applications, improved collaboration, and quicker feedback.

The Honda design team has been exploring, testing, and validating VR technology for six years, enabling them to have the necessary skills and equipment when the COVID-19 pandemic arose. The team will continue to explore the technical capabilities of VR and AR to enhance the quality and appeal of future Honda products while preserving the human touch in their designs.
