Birla Carbon & NREL’s study to be presented at the ACS Conference

The study will be presented at the American Chemical Society Conference, to be held from August 21 – 25, 2022, in Chicago, USA.

Birla Carbon has partnered in a study led by the National Renewable Energy Laboratories (NREL) on Carbon Anode Material from Biomass Pyrolysis Oil. The study investigates a novel approach to synthesizing the carbon anode materials for Lithium Ion Batteries (LIB) from biomass pyrolysis oil as part of the conversion processes to produce biofuels.

Co-authors of the study from Birla Carbon’s Energy Systems team include; Zachary Combs, R&D Director, Energy Systems, and Michael Regula, Senior Engineer, Energy Systems. Their contributions include graphite production, battery fabrication, testing, and performance assessment of LIB built from these materials, along with others.

Speaking about the opportunity, Dr Ann Schoeb, Chief R&D Officer and Business Head, Energy Systems, Birla Carbon, said, “Birla Carbon entered into the Battery market with a wide portfolio of performance conductive additives and graphites that are designed to improve the energy density, power density, and charging speed of lithium-ion and lead acid batteries.” She further adds, “It is a matter of pride for us to present and co-author a paper at the fall 2022 meeting of the ACS, as it is one of the world’s largest scientific organisations. Being able to present and share our analysis on synthesizing the carbon materials for LIB, for a future circular carbon economy, is how we engage with the industry and live our Purpose – ‘Share the Strength’.”
