Jaguar Land Rover partners with BASF for plastic recycling technology

British auto manufacturer Jaguar Land Rover has joined hands with BASF for tackling the plastic waste problem, the company has informed in a media release.

Named as ChemCycling project, under this, JLR takes the plastic waste and recycles it into premium material for potential use in future cars. The recycled plastic material is tested on prototype production parts in the all-electric Jaguar I-Pace.

JLR claims this collaboration with BASF is a step towards delivering the carmaker’s vision for a Destination Zero future.

The waste plastic is transformed to pyrolysis oil using a thermochemical process and then the secondary raw material is fed into BASF’s production chain as a replacement for fossil resources; producing a new premium grade that replicates the high quality and performance of ‘virgin’ plastics, says the company.

The release also claims that this recycled plastic can be tempered and coloured making it the ideal sustainable solution for designing the next-generation dashboards and exterior-surfaces in Jaguar and Land Rover models.
