A premium and exclusive leadership program of the Aditya Birla Group, which accelerates the development of middle and senior level talent to become leaders who can take on challenging roles in various functions at our plants. We mould manufacturing leaders of tomorrow through exposure to world-class technologies and processes, state-of-the-art research and development facilities and continuous learning and development opportunities.
GMLP is a unique programme from the Aditya Birla Group. How has the programme grown and what are its advantages?
GMLP started in 2011 and that was our first batch. It took us time to create awareness across manufacturing professionals, but the programme has built strength by strength every year with the applications surpassing previous years. We receive applications from professionals working in Indian companies as well as global multinationals. We receive significant number of applications from diverse industries as well as geographies. GMLP provides the selected member to be groomed on the skills for a leader while working in the manufacturing locations. It is a platform which provides a second chance to manufacturing professionals to reignite their careers by joining the GMLP programme.
The focus of GMLP is to hire people who have worked at the plant locations in core manufacturing roles and groom them for becoming leaders of tomorrow by providing the experience and development opportunities as required. As a Group we leverage the experience of the selected few to bring in the best perspectives and practices from outside.
Could you highlight how GMLP is a ‘Global’ programme?
India is an emerging manufacturing hub for all global companies that are headquartered in other geographies. Aditya Birla manufacturing businesses being headquartered in India, but competing globally builds the global perspectives of all the members who join through this program, hence provides an opportunity for all our manufacturing leaders to interact with global colleagues, global suppliers, and gain access to global benchmarking.
All our manufacturing businesses have a global footprint and not only in terms of customer network but also plant locations in 20 other countries. While all our employees enjoy that opportunity a select few also get the opportunity of working at global locations, most countries have work visa regulations, hence these are limited.
What are some of the unique aspects of GMLP?
We curate special programmes for the GMLP members, each selected member starts their development process within the first six months of joining the group. They undergo three to four leadership modules to ensure that they are prepared to take on the roles and challenges faced as Unit Heads/ Business Heads.
We find that our modules help them build their career journey in a holistic manner. For GMLP we offer a year’s dedicated training so that they can identify with their leadership skills. We have similar courses for employees too. There are three to four such courses and employees are trained internally at the same level. The modules are conducted by our very own leadership training academy, Gyanodaya, which is accredited among the top corporate universities globally.
How do you know you have selected the right candidate?
People we hire are fundamentally strong technical people and that is because our technical panel interviews them, validates their technical skills which comes from several rounds of interviews. Once they have successfully passed those four to five rounds at various levels in the interview process is when they are selected. Most people with 10 to 15 years of experience are yet to have developed their leadership qualities.
Our core focus for GMLP is cultivating leadership and inducting them into the Aditya Birla Group. We hone their leadership capability to rise to the next level and leverage available opportunities to take on leadership roles in manufacturing across multiple sectors.
What is in it for candidates once they are hired?
It’s more about putting in place our leadership pipeline for future development from an organisation perspective and developing the leadership quotient for the selectedmembers while working on a role.
