Vedanta Aluminium’s EPD-verified products lead the way in sustainability

An EPD is an internationally recognised document that provides transparent and scientifically verified information about a product’s environmental performance.

On the occasion of World Environment Day, Vedanta Aluminium announced that its range of products has received the Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) International verification. The verification process involved a rigorous Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), evaluating factors such as energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions, water usage, and waste generation. Vedanta’s primary aluminium products performed well on these parameters.

An Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) is an internationally recognised document that provides transparent and scientifically verified information about a product’s environmental performance. It presents data on the product’s environmental impact during raw material extraction, manufacturing, use, and end-of-life disposal.

Vedanta Aluminium’s EPD-verified primary aluminium products include billets, Primary Foundry Alloy (PFA), wire rods, and various categories of ingots. These products find applications in critical sectors such as aerospace, infrastructure, automotive, electrical, and packaging, as well as emerging sectors like hi-tech manufacturing, renewable energy, battery technologies, and electric vehicles.

Mr. Rahul Sharma, CEO of Vedanta Ltd – Aluminium Business, stated that the world rapidly transitioning to more sustainable approaches and the aluminium industry is poised for remarkable growth and innovation. As the backbone of a low-carbon future, aluminium’s exceptional properties hold immense potential for the energy transition. The Environmental Product Declaration is a testament to the company’s dedication to engineering sustainable products for its customers around the world, he added.

The company launched its low-carbon, ‘green’ aluminium range called ‘Restora,’ to meet the increasing demand for metals with a low carbon footprint. Additionally, Vedanta Aluminium became the first in the Indian aluminium industry to secure available BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards) certifications for its wide range of aluminium products.

Some notable milestones achieved by Vedanta Aluminium in their ongoing journey towards enhancing environmental management practices include a 24% reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions intensity in FY2022 compared to the 2012 baseline while increasing production by eight times. The company also recycled 13.69 billion litres of water and conserved over 1.51 billion litres of water in FY23, contributing to water-positive operations.
