Samsung making advancements in solid-state battery manufacturing

The technology has the potential to revolutionise various industries by enhancing storage capabilities.

Samsung has been considering the idea of manufacturing solid-state batteries for at least a decade now. Reportedly, it has been making headways in solid-state battery development. Two of its divisions will be responsible for manufacturing this technology for different market segments.

Purportedly, Samsung Electro-Mechanics is gearing up to research and develop oxide-based solid-state batteries for the IT segment. This revolutionary battery technology could help power future mobile devices. Meanwhile, Samsung SDI will be focusing its efforts on developing solid-state batteries with sulfide electrolytes for the EV (electric vehicle) segment.

Benefits of solid-state batteries

Solid-state batteries have varied benefits such as they have higher energy storage capacity compared to conventional lithium-ion batteries. They are much safer as they do not catch fire if punctured. This safety aspect makes solid-state batteries particularly desirable for electric vehicle manufacturers. Since they help in eliminating the risk of fire upon impact, they contribute to improving the overall safety of EVs. The solid-state batteries are expected to enhance the safety and durability of smartphones and tablets further benefiting the IT market. Samsung SDI is currently working on developing a solid-state battery. It is also jointly developing the battery with other institutes such as Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology, Samsung R&D Institute Japan and others.

Samsung SDI has been presenting mid-to-long-term solid-state battery technologies at the motor show or battery exhibitions since 2013. In March, the Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology showed the research result of a solid-state battery that can be charged/discharged over 1,000 times with 800km of mileage on a single charge. The study about the technology that increases life cycle and safety, and reduces the size of a solid-state battery in half was published in ‘Nature Energy’, a global scientific journal.

The technology has the potential to revolutionise various industries by enhancing storage capabilities, improving safety, and increasing durability.
